The 31 year-old – who converted to hooker from the back row midway through the campaign – has made 31 appearances for the club.

“Nick has proved his quality on the field. It takes a bold decision to switch positions at a relatively late stage in his career, but he backed himself to learn the new role and he’s working incredibly hard to become a Premiership-quality hooker,” said head coach Pat Lam.

“To have somebody in our squad who can play in both the front row and the back row will be a real asset in the top flight.

“Equally as important, Nick [Fenton-Wells] is a fantastic team man who embodies the spirit of our community-inspired vision. His contribution off the field – working closely with our community foundation – is admirable and a key element of what we are striving to achieve.”

Fenton-Wells bolsters competition in the position, with Harry Thacker (Leicester Tigers), Shaun Malton (Exeter Chiefs), Tom Lindsay (Bedford Blues) and Will Capon (Bristol Academy and England U18s) also joining Lam’s squad in the summer.

He added: “The opportunity to continue my journey with Bristol Rugby was one that I couldn’t turn down. I’m proud of the environment and culture that we are working hard to create and it’s a club that has everything in place to make the next step.

“I’m still learning the nuances of my new role in the team, but I’m enjoying working with the coaches and I will be doing everything I can to help the team and contribute to our success moving forward.”
