‘A great team effort’ - Lam

Pat Lam hailed an impressive ‘team effort’ after his side battled to a 21-13 derby victory over Gloucester in the Premiership Rugby Cup.

Bristol scored three times courtesy of back-row trio, Nick Haining, Dan Thomas and Jake Heenan to record a first victory over the Cherry and Whites in ten years, and the head coach praised his players for grinding out a result.

“The pack obviously gave us the foundations, but I thought the backs shared the workload of getting up and carrying the ball, and it was a great team effort,” he said.

“We made some changes in our defence and also focused on trying to keep the ball for long periods of time, a little bit like ‘rope-a-dope’ – nudge here, nudge there, jab here, jab there, and eventually we came through.

“When we lost to Worcester Warriors it was the best thing for us. We have all been through a bit of adversity, so now we need some growth going on in our games.

“The next four or five weeks is like a mini pre-season to give everyone an opportunity when we get back to the Premiership.”

Bristol travel to the Ricoh Arena next Sunday to take on Wasps in round three of the Premiership Rugby Cup, before making a return to league action at Ashton Gate on Sunday, 18th November, when Exeter Chiefs are the visitors.
