Academy confirm 36-man squad for U18s campaign

Bristol Bears Academy U18s have confirmed their squad ahead of the 2019/20 U18s League, which gets underway in December.

With six weeks to go until the opening clash – a mouthwatering local derby with Bath at Shaftesbury Park on Saturday, December 14th(11.30am KO) – Bears select a 36-man group for the training camp.

The Academy has seen significant change over the summer, with the hugely experienced Gethin Watts taking over as Senior Academy Manager.

The former WRU National Performance Manager is joined by Jordan Crane, Danny Grewcock and Sean Marsden in U18s coaching team.

Gethin Watts to lead the Bears Academy U18 programme (JMPUK).

“There’s a wealth of knowledge in our backroom team and we’ve really embraced the challenge of working with this group of players so far,” said Watts.

“The next block of preparation is crucial to ensure we meet the standards and requirements we have set ourselves for the U18s competition.

“There’s a clear focus to improve as a collective and to be competitive. We’ve been really clear about what we expect as a team and as individuals and that forms part of our longer-term strategy to bring through world class players into the senior set up.

“It’s been a competitive process to refine the squad to 36 guys, but inclusion is ongoing and we will continue to monitor games and individuals around the region. So many of these players have come through the DPP/PDG programme, demonstrating a clear pathway to this level and strong alignment across all age groups of the Academy.

“We’ll host a parents evening on Monday (November 11th) to discuss how they can continue to support player development and growth. The ethos of living and breathing the Bristol Bears values – whether our players are at school, at training or at home – are integral to us being successful.”

Bristol Bears host Bath Rugby at Dings’ Shaftesbury Park on December 14th (11.30am), before travelling to Gloucester Rugby at Newlands Park Sports venue on Friday, December 20th (7pm KO).
