As it happened: Bristol Bears 20-17 Gloucester Rugby

Bristol Bears sealed a first victory of the new season with a 20-17 triumph over West Country rivals Gloucester in the Premiership Cup on Friday night.

Harry Thacker and Charlie Powell touched down either side of half-time, while Callum Sheedy added ten points from tee to fire Pat Lam's side to victory at Ashton Gate.

Gloucester, who outscored the hosts by three tries to two through Joe Simpson, Ruan Ackermann and Gerbrandt Grobler, rallied in the closing stages to set up a nervy climax, but it was the home side who held on to take the spoils in BS3.

5 minsTRY7-0 – An impressive start from the hosts, who rumble over from a driving lineout with Thacker touching down at the tail. Sheedy converts.

12 minsPEN10-0 – Bears awarded a penalty for Gloucester infringement at the breakdown and Sheedy steps up to land the long-range penalty and extend hosts’ lead.

20 minsPEN13-0 – Sheedy lands his third successful kick of the evening to make it 13-0 early on, as the home side turn the screw at Ashton Gate.

28 minsYELLOW – Gloucester sweep forward and into the Bristol 22, where Dan Thomas is sent to the sin-bin with the visitors applying pressure.

Harry Thacker touches down for the opening try (JMPUK).

32 minsTRY13-5 - Gloucester hit back through Joe Simpson, with the scrum-half grabbing a debut try after dazzling break from Tom Marshall. A well-worked score from the visitors, who drag themselves back into the game.

39 mins – Hurrell makes a bust from a strong Bears scrum, crashing over the gain line. Luatua is next to make a half break, but with the home side metres from a second try, a mix-up between Uren and Thacker sees Bristol penalised for crossing close to the Gloucester line.

46 minsTRY20-5 – Bristol quick out of the blocks after the break and into their stride with a scorching counter-attack try, as Luatua and Daniels combine to send Charlie Powell over in the corner. Sheedy adds the extras from out wide and Bristol open open up a 15-point lead.

Charlie Powell celebrates his second-half try.

55 mins – Bristol come close to a third, as Uren’s floated pass releases Edwards, but the wing is halted just short. When the ball is moved back left, Daniel’s pass is blocked by last defender, with calls for a deliberate knock-on waved away by Tom Foley.

61 minsTRY20-10 – Ruan Ackermann grabs Gloucester’s second, stretching over the ruck to dab down in the right-hand corner. Evans' conversion is off target again.

62 minsYELLOW – Jack Bates sin-binned for dangerous tackle in the air, just seconds after coming on as a replacement for Ryan Edwards, leaving the Bears down to 14 men for the second time in the evening.

77 minsTRY20-17 – Grobler powered over from close range and Evans converts to set up a nervy finale at Ashton Gate.
