Attitude is key ahead of ‘tough’ Yorkshire clash - Lam

Pat Lam has called on his side to replicate the attitude and character of last weekend’s victory over Rotherham Titans when Yorkshire Carnegie arrive at Ashton Gate on Friday (7:45pm KO).

A brace from Luke Morahan and a faultless kicking display from Ian Madigan saw Lam’s side run out 44-14 winners at Headingley in November – but the head coach insists Bristol will be wary of threat posed by fifth-place Carnegie.

“The northern teams, they’re tough guys and they’ve got some strength out wide as well,” he said.

“They opened us up a few times when we went up there as well. They haven’t played for three weeks, so they’ll be itching to get out there after their game was called off last week.

“They will be pretty fresh and ready to get into us, but our focus is completely on building on last week, building on the work ethic and building on the attitude and character.”

Lam was also quick to hail the ‘superb’ away following at Clifton Lane last Saturday, after hundreds of fans braved the treacherous conditions to watch Bristol grind out a hard-fought away win.

“They (Yorkshire Carnegie) haven’t played for three weeks, so they’ll be itching to get out there after their game was called off last week.
They will be pretty fresh and ready to get into us, but our focus is completely on building on last week, building on the work ethic and building on the attitude and character.”

“Fair play to the fans that went up to Rotherham in those conditions – we really appreciated their support,” he said.

“The players rolled up their sleeves, carried the ball, made their tackles and went after the breakdown and clean out. It was more around character and physicality - that’s the sort of team we want to build.

“Everyone has their natural strengths and things that they love doing, but it was about getting excited about the things that you have to do for your team, rather than the things you want to do.

“I got the response that we needed in pretty tough conditions – and all of those guys who performed can be proud of themselves.

“We did it away from home, we’ve now got to do it at Ashton Gate.”
