Bears to launch Foundation Degree in partnership with University of South Wales

Bristol Bears are set to launch a new two-year Foundation Degree in partnership with the Bristol Bears Community Foundation and University of South Wales, offering the opportunity to gain a university level qualification based at Ashton Gate and the Bears High Performance Centre.

The variety offered by the course provides students with the chance to develop all of the necessary skills, qualities and characteristics to work within professional rugby clubs, community sport departments and national governing bodies.

The programme - which facilitates sports coaching education and development - sees students take part in a range of modules including sports development in practice, coaching and leadership, as well as PE and community school sports.

Alongside the academic element of the course, students will complete up to 200 hours of work-based coaching within the community per year, alongside Bristol Bears’ official charity, the Bears Foundation.

Community Development Manager Craig Capel said: “The launch of a new Foundation Degree in partnership with Bristol Bears is hugely exciting and contributes well to our developing strategy of providing a purposeful pathway from education to employment with Bristol Bears Community Foundation.

“Home grown players representing the club is a very clear objective for Bristol Bears. We look forward to contributing to home grown people working for the club or foundation by providing an outstanding degree programme for those with a passion for rugby and coaching.”

Professional Development Manager Andrew Bell added: “Our vision is to Inspire Our Community Through Rugby Success. Outside of the classroom, students will engage in meaningful opportunities to develop their craft of coaching through a coach education programme based at the Bears High Performance Centre and in community settings. The Foundation Degree will provide a club mentor to support the studies, as well as at least two Residential Study Visits to USW each year.”

Our Foundation Degree equips students with the skills to go into a whole host of different roles after completing their studies:

  • Top up to a full BSc (Hons) degree in Sports Coaching and Development at Ashton Gate Stadium & Bears High Performance Centre
  • Job opportunities at Bristol Bears or Bears Foundation Performance or community coaching roles
