Bears Women unveil new Player Pathway Programme

Bristol Bears Women is delighted to announce a new Player Pathway Programme ahead of the 2020/21 season with the aim to nurture and develop the next generation of talent.

Three clubs local to the city of Bristol form the new Player Pathway Programme (PPP) as Bristol Bears Women form a link with Championship side Bath RFC Ladies, North Bristol Ladies RFC and St Mary’s Old Boys Ladies Rugby.

The Player Pathway Programme is designed to strengthen the existing local talent pathways in place across the region and provide a conducive learning environment that allows players to excel.

Talented players from the current successful pathways such as the University of Bristol, SGS College, Weston College, Bears Centre of Excellence and Club Open Trials will be directed towards playing at the clubs included in the Player Pathway Programme.

The development and growth of homegrown Bristolian talent is a pillar of the Bristol Bears’ vision. This programme will provide young players with the skills and environment needed to fulfil the long-term goal of ascertaining a place in the Bristol Bears Women squad.

Rownita Marston (picture above) is one of a number of players in the Bears Women squad that have come through the local player pathway having played at SGS College and North Bristol RFC.

As part of the programme Bristol Bears Women will aid the development of the clubs included in the pathway by providing support via Strength & Conditioning programming, position specific coaching sessions, nutritional support as well as match analysis.

This season the Player Pathway Programme is being run in addition to the Bears’ Sister Club programme, which is aimed at growing women and girls’ grassroots rugby local to the Bristol area.

Bears Women General Manager, Heidi Chapman-Mercer said: "We see this as an exceptionally exciting program that will enable us to not only strengthen the foundations of Bears Women in the local are but also aid the growth of the clubs we’re working with.

“We’re in a very fortunate position to have a high calibre player base as well as fantastic coaching staff and volunteers that help run the club, who can all help and assist clubs in the local area and develop them through various means.

“As a club we collectively want grow, excite and inspire women’s and girls’ rugby in the local area and help cultivate the next crop of Bristol Bears Women players.”
