Becky Hughes announces retirement from women’s rugby

Bristol Bears Women Club Captain, Becky Hughes will retire from the game this summer following 11 years at the club.

Hughes joined the club in 2009 at the then Clifton Ladies RFC as a fearless 17-year-old Bristolian, alongside Amber Reed and Katie Mason after being introduced to the game at Colstons School.

The fly-half made the step up to start in the first team at just 18 years of age in her maiden season and has gone on to become an integral part of the playing group in her decade of service to her hometown club.

Hughes’ leadership qualities amongst the playing group were recognised this season as she was named Club Captain for the 2019/20 campaign.

Head Coach, Kim Oliver, said: “The impact Becky had was not just on the pitch but also off it as well.

“Be that with her role as Club Captain, her support of fellow players, or helping shape the club, and contributing to where the it is today - her love for the club has always shone through.

“She has been hugely committed, and a fantastic servant to the club over the 11 years that she has been involved.

“Everyone would like to thank Becky for all she has done for the club. She will be sorely missed by all and we wish her all the best for the next chapter in her life.”
