Major Chris Hunter QGM will share his experiences from ‘the world’s most dangerous job, in the world’s most dangerous place’ at Ashton Gate on Friday, October 28th.
By the time he arrived in Iraq in 2004, Hunter was one of the most experienced counter-terrorist bomb disposal specialists in the British Army.
In fourteen years, he’d seen active service in the Balkans, East Africa, Northern Ireland, Colombia, and Afghanistan, but Iraq was different.
Despite being shot and wounded in an ambush just four days into his tour, Chris and his team became so successful at disabling insurgent bombs, that the bombers ended up putting a price on his head and designing bombs specifically for him.
Chris Hunter joined the British Army aged sixteen, training as a Russian linguist and intelligence operator. Shortly afterwards, he was commissioned from Sandhurst and re-trained as a bomb disposal operator, after which he served with a number of Special Forces units.
During his military career, Chris deployed to a number of operational theatres, including The Balkans, Northern Ireland, Colombia, Afghanistan and Iraq. For his actions during his Iraq tour, he was awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal.
Hunter played an instrumental role during the July 2005 London bombings when he was seconded to COBRA – the Cabinet Office’s emergency response committee as a suicide terrorism expert.
Since retiring from the army as the MOD’s senior IED intelligence analyst, Chris Hunter has worked as a counter-terrorism consultant, training members of the US Department of Defence and providing specialist consultancy services in the UK and overseas.
He is the best-selling author of the non-fiction titles: Eight Lives Down and Extreme Risk and is a regular contributor to television & radio news and current affairs programmes.
Join us at Ashton Gate to listen to Major Chris Hunter's incredible stories on Friday, October 28th, 8am-10am.
