Break the Cycle 2017 bathes in summer sunshine

More than 300 cyclists braved the scorching conditions on Sunday to complete their chosen route at Break the Cycle 2017.

Hardy fundraisers saddled up in temperatures upwards of 25 degrees, setting off from Ashton Gate early in the morning and arriving back throughout the afternoon, having completed either the Gold (100 miles), Silver (65 miles) or Bronze (35 miles) routes.

“Hats off – and a huge thank you - to the hundreds of cyclists who took to the saddle in boiling hot conditions to raise money for our charities,” said chief community officer, Ben Breeze.

“Break the Cycle 2017 opened itself up to a whole new audience this year, with the introduction of two new, shorter routes and it was amazing to see cyclists of all ages, abilities and experiences taking part.

“Every penny raised goes towards the continuation and development of our life-changing and award-winning work, so we are eternally grateful to everyone for their mammoth efforts.”

The Bronze route saw Break The Cycle team up with Bristol as European City of Sport and the ‘Are You Game?’ campaign to sponsor 100 places for the 35-mile beginner challenge – and event director, Paul Glanville was delighted to see the partnership in action.

“We were delighted to support Bristol as a European City Of Sport by allocating 100 promotional places on our Bronze 35mile route to the ‘Are You Game?’ campaign,” he said.

“It was fantastic to see so many people take up the offer and enjoy the beautiful Bristol to Bath Cycle path on our shortest route.”

But away from the bike, Ashton Gate was also a hive of activity as Santander hosted the Family Zone outside the stadium.

People of all ages took part in Santander’s static bike relay, while others had a kick around with the Bristol City Community Trust, who had their target cages on site.

The Family Zone was also waiting for our hardy cyclists on their return to the stadium, serving cold Amstel beer and mouthwatering Nando’s chicken.
