Bristol Funeral Directors and Bristol Funeral Plans announced as Walking Rugby sponsors

Walking Rugby in Bristol has been given a huge boost thanks to the generosity of independent family firm, Bristol Funeral Directors, who have come on board as programme sponsor.

The firm’s support is another example of the impressive business and community partnership work being driven by the Bristol Sport Foundation’s Nascence Project, providing new and innovative opportunities for local and national business.

Bristol Funeral Directors has been providing first rate funeral services to Bristol families for over 100 years and has now moved to support one of the fastest growing sports for people over the age of 55 in the city.

“Having been supporters of Bristol Sport through the Lansdown Club for a number of years, we were aware of the work conducted by Bristol Rugby throughout the community,” said Andrew Gunningham, marketing manager at Bristol Funeral Directors.

“When the opportunity came to visit a Walking Rugby session, it was clear to see the enjoyment and friendships created within the group. As a family business focused on supporting the local community - and having a long association with Combination rugby - it felt natural to provide sponsorship to the Walking Rugby, as well as giving time by volunteering at the sessions.”

Walking Rugby has spearheaded the growth of Walking Sport, with four hubs now running weekly, including the first fully sustainable Bristol & District Combination Club satellite hub at Kingswood Rugby Club, who themselves were recently crowned ‘champions’ at a regional festival in Bristol consisting of over 70 players.

The programme’s growth and progress was awarded with an invitation to the 2016/17 Aviva Premiership Final at Twickenham, where it was showcased as a shining example of best practice by Premiership Rugby.

“The rate of development of Walking Rugby in Bristol really has blown us away here at the Foundation,” said programme manager, Kris Tavender.

“From our first conversations with old friends Bernie, Mike and Bob at LinkAge tasters, to the drive and desire to play on the Ashton Gate pitch, the direction really has been driven by the incredible older people involved.

“Andrew (Gunningham) and Bristol Funerals are simply a natural evolution in this process – like-minded, family-focussed people, looking to make a change in the community around them.”
