Bristol Grammar School 'delighted' to support squad preparation

Bristol Grammar School’s director of sport, Rick Sellers says the school has been only too happy to aid Bristol Rugby in their preparation for tomorrow’s GKIPA Championship clash with Ealing Trailfinders.

Pat Lam’s side have been preparing for the artificial surface at Vallis Way by training at identical facilities across the city, with Bristol Grammar School (BGS), Bristol University and SGS College all opening their doors to the squad.

This week, Bristol spent two days at the BGS’ brand-new 4G facility on Clevedon Road – and Sellers says they have been ‘delighted’ to help out.

“The school wants to give as much support to the city’s club as possible,” he said. “I think we have a strong affiliation with Bristol Rugby - a number of our staff are involved with the coaching on the academy programme and I have a long-standing relationship with the club as well.

“We do have a large number of players involved in the academy, so there is a natural affinity to the club, but I suppose, even more specifically, I’m looking over now at the training session and two of our current sixth formers – Will Capon and Charlie Powell – are out there and certainly not looking out of place among a group of experienced professionals.

“They’ve got great aspirations for their own game and we’re delighted they’ve had these opportunities.

“The players come up and are very happy to mix with our students. Our little people, in particular, are fascinated when these large athletes are around. They love seeing that and the players and whole squad – and I include the coaches in that – are completely engaged with them.

“Sean Marsden, one of our former students, is involved in the coaching team and it’s great to see him here. Pat Lam came to the school and did an assembly for us, and that was inspirational and has drawn continuous praise in the two-week period since he did it - it’s really resonated with the students here.

“We’re absolutely delighted to be able to give some assistance and provide as much opportunity as possible for Bristol to train at the right level. If it helps them beat Ealing on the weekend, then that’s absolutely what we’d like to do.”
