Bristol Rugby stars to attend Nuts Over the Atlantic launch

Eight Bristol Rugby stars will be in attendance as four hardy Bristol men launch their incredible quest to row across the Atlantic Ocean.

Tom Varndell, Nick Fenton-Wells, Gaston Cortes, Joe Joyce, Olly Robinson, Ollie Dawe, Ryan Glynn and Jack O'Connell will join the lads from Nuts Over the Atlantic at Ashton Gate Stadium tonight (Thursday, 14th September, 6pm) for a launch party and question and answer session. 

The quartet - made up of Jon Lakin, Steve Baker, Dan Baker and Mark Gibson - will take on the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in December - rowing more than 3,000 nautical miles across the world's second largest ocean, the Atlantic.

Bristol Sport Foundation has donated £5,000 to the team’s cause, as they head west from San Sebastian in La Gomera before finishing in Nelson's Dockyard English Harbour in Antigua.

The event is free and open to everyone, so why not head along to find out more about the quartet's gruelling challenge. 

The event will feature:

  • A question and answer session
  • An inspirational speech about the upcoming challenge
  • Networking opportunities
  • Canapés upon arrival
  • Ocean rowing boat on display
  • An opportunity to win an experience on a boat

“The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is an epic challenge that we are proudly undertaking in partnership with Bristol Sport,” said group member Jon Lakin.

“We will be battling 3,000 miles of open water, 40 foot waves as well as a brutal two hour on, two hour off regime 24 hours a day for six weeks.

“As a team we are passionate about our reasons for undertaking this challenge. We have been affected by mental health issues first hand as well as having relatives with prostate and testicular cancer.

“This challenge has a key message at the heart of it and encouraging men to talk about their health is at the core of these issues and if we can set an example, what better platform to spread the message.”
