Bristol Sign Back Row Prospect

Bristol Rugby have snapped up exciting back row prospect Rayn Smid from Western Province.

The 23 year-old – who hails from Cape Town – is comfortable at number eight or flanker.

A graduate of the Western Province Academy, Smid enjoyed a superb debut season for the senior side, starting in all nine Vodacom Cup fixtures during 2013/14.

“We’re pleased to be able to add Rayn to the squad, he’ll add some good competition for places in the back row,” Director of Rugby Andy Robinson told bristolrugby.co.uk.

“Rayn has performed well in the Vodacom Cup and age group rugby in South Africa and now he’s seeking a fresh challenge. He’ll relish the physicality of the Championship and the style of rugby we want to play.”

Smid was included in the Stormers wider training squad ahead of the 2014/15 Super Rugby season.

He added: “It’s a great opportunity for me to come and experience playing rugby for Bristol Rugby.

“I’ve spoken to Andy [Robinson] about his plans and there’s an exciting future building at the Club with the new stadium on the horizon.

“I’m ready to work hard and compete for a place in the starting line-up but I’m looking forward to pulling on the jersey and getting out there.”
