Bristol Sport Goes Green For 2015!

Bristol Sport has announced it’s going green as the city becomes European Green Capital for the year.

Ahead of the official launch of Green Capital, three Bristol Sport athletes have confirmed their ambitions to “go green” for 2015. City captain Wade Elliott, Bristol Rugby and former Wales skipper Ryan Jones and Flyers Basketball captain Greg Streete will help promote the message to inspire Bristol to become a greener, happier and healthier city!

CEO of Bristol Sport Andrew Billingham said: “The notion that we can make a real difference to the city by partnering with Bristol 2015 is an enticing one.

“One of the key things identified by European Green Capital is around living healthier lives. Sport naturally plays a huge part in this. Bristol Sport’s mission is to promote sport, at all levels of ability. If we can inspire people to get more active then we are making a real difference.

“A core part of our commitment, along with the ambassadors and the rebuilding of Ashton Gate, is to help create a green route from city to stadium. This could be a great chance to provide Bristol with a lasting legacy.”

Something City captain Wade Elliott agrees with: “I’m really pleased to be a green ambassador for 2015. The green route is a great idea. My partner quite often comes in to Ashton Gate with me and then walks into town. She really likes it but it could certainly be improved. I’d love to see fans using it the other way - to come and cheer us along on matchdays!”

Bristol 2015 chairman Andrew Garrad added: “We are really excited to be partnering with Bristol Sport. Throughout 2015 the eyes of the world will be on Bristol as European Green Capital.

“We are the first UK city to ever win this award and as such we have a great opportunity to become a blueprint and role model for sustainable city-living worldwide. The creation of nature corridors across the city for wildlife and green spaces to thrive is just one small but very tangible way of improving our urban spaces. ”
