Community Foundation launches post-16 Education Academy

Bristol Bears Community Foundation is delighted to launch its new post-16 Education Programme, supporting the development of young people and nurturing the growth of the game across the community.

The Bristol Bears Education Academy is a two-year, full time education and coach development programme for 16 to 18-year-olds and aims to develop home grown talent off the field, as well as on it.

The scheme aims to provide a high-quality education programme at an outstanding venue, to be confirmed in the very near future. The programme will be hosted in the north of the city and provide unrivalled opportunities for young people interested in working in the sport and leisure industry, to engage with Bristol Bears and Bristol Bears Community Foundation.

The Community Foundation celebrates its 10th year this summer, and with aspirations of growing its own workforce of staff and volunteers, the Bristol Bears Education Academy will provide unique and meaningful work placement prospects within the professional club, charity and surrounding Combination clubs.

Community Development Manager, Craig Capel, said: “Our provision continues to grow, and the Bristol Bears Education Academy brings yet more opportunity for a broad number of young people from across Bristol to benefit from a remarkable education offer.

“The programme aims to bring the world of professional and community sport to young people through well planned and unique work placements and experience.

“Employers are increasingly interested in candidates that are able to demonstrate additional skills outside of the classroom. This programme aims to equip young people with the skills and qualities needed to be successful in whatever they choose to move onto - whether it be direct employment, apprenticeships or higher education and university.”

The Bristol Bears Education Academy will be delivered in partnership with SCL - the national education partner of Premiership Rugby - who will continue to build on the tremendous expertise and value demonstrated to our HITZ programme locally.

Working in partnership with 70+ professional and grassroots sports clubs, community trusts and foundations across the country and graduating over 2,000 learners each year, SCL are one of the UK’s leading providers of education through sport.

Lawrence Blair, Director of Partnerships at SCL, said: “We are excited to be continuing the success of our partnership with Premiership Rugby as we launch an exciting new education and coaching development programme with Bristol Bears Community Foundation.

“The Foundation do a lot of excellent work in the local community as they strive to improve the lives of youngsters through rugby, which aligns perfectly with our vision here at SCL.

“This exciting programme will create a unique opportunity for young people to gain industry recognised qualifications in sport whilst building an impressive portfolio of meaningful work experience with Bristol Bears Community Foundation.”
