Defining Derby Moments: Bears vs Bath

The West Country derby has conjured up drama, tension and many a memorable moment throughout the years - here's three Defining Derby Moments from recent times.

A new era

A packed house, a dramatic win and the beginning of a new era at Ashton Gate, as the newly-rebranded Bristol Bears stormed to an opening day victory over Bath.

Alapati Leiua's late try, collecting Luke Morahan's deft offload to dive over, took the roof off in BS3 and fired the hosts to a memorable victory under the Friday Night Lights.

A star is born

As he stood pitchside waiting to enter the fray, Ioan Lloyd found himself shoulder to shoulder with one of his rugby heroes, Bath's Welsh international centre, Jamie Roberts.

The powerhouse midfielder was the first to congratulate Lloyd on his imminent professional debut as they stood on the halfway line - and the 18-year-old back capped a remarkable rise to stardom late in proceedings, racing on to Morahan's pass to slide in, as the Bears ran riot in a 43-16 win at a sold out Ashton Gate.

The skipper's swan dive

The Bears took on Bath at Ashton Gate in round three of the 2021/22 Gallagher Premiership season, where a dogged and determined second-half performance lifted them to a first Gallagher Premiership win of the season - and a fifth successive victory over their West Country rivals - on a breathless night at Ashton Gate.

It was midway through the first half when captain Steven Luatua found himself in acres of space on the left-hand side, where he cut in and delivered an elaborate swan dive to send a raucous Ashton Gate into raptures.

Semi the showstopper!

The only disappointment from this sensational derby moment was that there were no supporters there to see it.

Radradra put the gloss on an emphatic derby thumping of Bath in BS3, turning the visitors inside out in a 48-3 victory for Pat Lam's men at Ashton Gate.
