Downland School's Cory Slater named Most Improved Young Person at RugbyWorks Awards

Cory Slater of Downland School in Devizes was the standout winner at the Dallaglio RugbyWorks Awards 2017.

On Thursday 13th July, Will Smith (RugbyWork coach) and Chloe King (RugbyWork student) presented Cory Slater with the Lawrence Dallaglio Most Improved Young Person of the Year award, hosted by the Macquarie Group at their office in the City of London.

The Awards celebrate the successes of the RugbyWorks programme, which supports teenagers outside of mainstream education into sustained further education, employment or training. The programme works with 14-17 year olds over a three-year intensive period within alternative provision schools.

The Most Improved Young Person of the Year Award, in particular recognises the overall improvements of an individual on the programme. Everything from improvement in attitude and engagement to an improvement in rugby skills; all are considered in this award. The most significant thing to note is the change in this young person’s outlook and the development of potential future prospects due to this change.

Cory had quite a difficult start to the year when his engagement during both sessions, and his school lessons were continually effected by his poor choices of behaviour. Following some difficult sessions with Cory, he began to take more of a positive role and improve his attitude.

Cory is a strong and athletic individual and it soon became apparent he had the skills necessary to be an accomplished rugby player. Recently, Cory managed to get a weekend job at the local bakers following a work experience placement earlier in the year.

Lawrence Dallaglio, the charity’s founder and former England Rugby captain, said: “When you’ve had a tough start in life, uniting through sport, particularly rugby, can be immensely powerful. It takes real commitment to be part of RugbyWorks and both Tommy and Will should be truly proud of their achievements. “

Based around a curriculum of skills development through rugby, classroom based activities and mentoring, RugbyWorks is delivered in small groups to enable a profound impact for each young person. Working with corporate supporters, Dallaglio RugbyWorks provides vocational experiences for the young people. CV and interview workshops and work experience placements help build a path to sustained education, employment or training.

David Fass, CEO of Macquarie Group EMEA, said: “We are very proud to continue to support the Dallaglio RugbyWorks Awards. Over the last three years, we’ve seen the positive impact the programme has on the young people it works with, providing them with vital vocational experience and supporting their personal development enhancing their career opportunities.”

Dallaglio RugbyWorks currently works in 11 London Boroughs, Newcastle, Bristol, the South West and South Wales with 250 young people. Dallaglio RubyWorks will be launching into two new regions in September, the North West and East Midlands.
