‘European win a huge boost’ - Lam

Pat Lam declared himself ‘extremely delighted and very proud’ of his Bristol Bears side, after they inflicted a first home defeat of the season on Top 14 high-flyers La Rochelle at Stade Marcel-Deflandre on Saturday.

Jordan Crane’s second-half try and seven points from the boot of Callum Sheedy secured a memorable European win for Bristol, who keep their hopes of a Challenge Cup quarter-final firmly alive heading into the New Year.

“This is a huge moment in our season,” said the head coach. “We always talk about all the work we do in our squad. It doesn’t matter who wears the jersey in our squad you do it proud, you get in and you know your roles.

“I am extremely delighted and very proud. We have trained really well this week and we knew we were unlucky last week, we made a few errors.

“Tonight, it was a massive effort, particularly on defence. There were some big boys there and you saw and heard the crowd there. It was a huge moment in our season.

“It is a big moment for these boys in their careers and for us as a group. It keeps us alive in the competition and I know the boys back home and the rest of the management team will be extremely proud to see the effort put in tonight."

Pat Lam, head coach

“One of the hardest places to win club rugby is away in France and so many people have been here before and can only count how many times they have done that on one hand.

“It is a big moment for these boys in their careers and for us as a group. It keeps us alive in the competition and I know the boys back home and the rest of the management team will be extremely proud to see the effort put in tonight.

“It gives us a huge boost going into Christmas, everyone is feeling good and trusting the systems.

“It was terrible conditions and probably one of the heaviest fields we have played on this season but the quality of the rugby we played was great.

“We probably blew two or three tries as well, we probably had a couple more in us, so to be able to say that at a place like this is very pleasing.”
