Foundation secures BBC Children in Need grant for wheelchair sport

Bristol Bears Community Foundation has secured a significant three-year grant from BBC Children in Need for the delivery and development of wheelchair multi-sport rugby and wheelchair basketball in the city.

The funding will provide meaningful sporting opportunity for young people with a learning or physical disability, mental health and anxiety difficulties and those who may not typically engage in mainstream sport.

Funding will also support the launch of a weekly hub for seven to 18-year-olds, holiday camps in school breaks and a comprehensive schools outreach programme throughout the academic year.

“This grant award really is a game changer for youth wheelchair sport here in Bristol,” said programme manager, Kris Tavender.

“Some of the most marginalised and disadvantaged young people across the city and beyond will have guaranteed access to meaningful sporting opportunities on a weekly basis, as well as in every school holiday.

“To think that our players will be able to choose their own sporting activity on evenings and weekends, as well as the school holidays in the same way their siblings, friends and peers will is such a blessing.

“BBC Children in Need’s aspirations are so closely aligned with our own in terms of reaching out to those in the greatest need, and really making life-changing impact.

“And, with our participants, their families and volunteers involved in the development of this provision from the start, we have three amazing years of foundation building ahead of us to create a truly inclusive and sustainable future for wheelchair sport in Bristol.”
