‘Fundamentals let us down’ – Lam

A disappointed Pat Lam said fundamental errors were his side’s downfall during Saturday’s 27-10 defeat to Sale Sharks at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Steven Luatua crossed for Bristol’s only try of the afternoon, with Denny Solomona, Will Cliff and 17 points from the boot of Robert Du Preez sealing victory for the home side.

And the head coach was left frustrated as Bristol failed to convert a strong start into an 80-minute performance.

“We started well but ultimately our game comes to life when we get all our little bits and pieces done well and we didn’t do that,” he said.

“A lot of our fundamentals – catch, pass and discipline – (let us down). We started well, went 3-0 up and were putting pressure on them, and then we made a couple of mistakes which allowed them in. Then our discipline wasn’t great.

Pat Lam, head coach

“We spoke about it at half-time and about our kicking game, but again we didn’t execute. I thought Du Preez and Faf de Klerk ran the game really well for them and we didn’t manage our game as well.

“But that’s the nature of this competition; you’ve got to win your home games and, when you come away, see what you can do.”

Bristol Bears welcome Newcastle Falcons to Ashton Gate on Sunday, 30th December (3pm KO). Tickets are available to purchase online now by clicking here, or via supporter services on 0117 963 0600.
