George Smith - all you need to know

Described by England head coach, Eddie Jones as ‘the best player he has ever seen’, legendary Wallabies flanker, George Smith is, undoubtedly, one of the greatest players of the professional era.

Smith played 111 test matches for Australia - making him the country’s most capped forward, and the second most capped Wallaby of all time – and has represented some of the biggest clubs in world rugby, including Toulon, Stade Francais, Queensland Reds, Wasps and his beloved ACT Brumbies.

The players' player

In 12 seasons with the Brumbies, Smith was voted Players' Player eight times – remarkably, seven times in successive seasons from 2002- 2008. Between 2006 and 2009, he was also the Australian Super 14 Player of the Year over four consecutive seasons.

In his time with Wasps, Smith was awarded the 2015 and 2016 Players' Player Award by the Aviva Premiership Players Association, while in 2017, he was awarded the Queensland Reds 'Pilecki Medal' as Player of the Year.

National hero

Smith was capped 111 times by Australia and recently included in the Wallabies' team of the decade.

He was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in 2012, is a two-time recipient of the John Eales Medal.

He became the Wallabies 75th Captain in 2007 and is the youngest player to have played 100 tests for the Wallabies; reaching the milestone before his 30th birthday.

Global experience

Having plied his trade in four countries, three continents and two hemispheres – at the Brumbies, Toulon, Lyon, Suntory Sungoliath, Stade Francais and Wasps – Smith is as experienced a player as there is in world rugby.

His career domination and reputation as a world-class exponent of the breakdown saw England head coach, Eddie Jones call upon his services in a coaching capacity in January 2016, working with the national squad in a coaching capacity.

Coming soon

Now plying his trade at Queensland Reds in the 2018 Super Rugby competition – and with 153 caps in the competition - George Smith remains one of the most prolific players in the modern game, and he’s coming to a stadium near you.
