Harlequins press in brief: five things we learned

Head coach Pat Lam and hooker Harry Thacker faced the media ahead of Saturday's game against Harlequins at Ashton Gate - here's what we learned from this week's press session.

Home form

Pat Lam highlighted the importance of home form in the Gallagher Premiership ahead of Saturday's return to Ashton Gate.

“In the Premiership, you’ve got to be winning your home games and then trying to go away and pick up as many games and as many points as you can. It’s round four, we’re back at home and looking forward to it.”

Lessons

The head coach also insisted his side would learn lessons from their shortcomings at Kingsholm.

“We’re always disappointed to lose but we always say: we never lose, we win or learn, and there’s a lot of good learning we’ve put in place this week as we continue to grow into the team we want to be,” he said.

Harry Thacker added: "We learned a lot from those two away trips. We had the massive high against Bath, but when we looked back at that game we saw there was still a lot to learn.

"We’ve come away from Saracens and Gloucester knowing we’re not a million miles off it. We’re at the races but know that in the Premiership, it’s all about small margins."

Striving for improvement

After conceding 32 unanswered points during the second half at Kingsholm, Lam insists improvement is required, but is pleased with the reaction of his squad.

"We didn’t play well at all, right through the whole game, there were so many mistakes and discipline issues – even when we were 13-3 up, we weren’t playing good rugby," he said.

"But what I’ve seen this week is the amount of guys doing extras, or working in little groups to improve things."

Double-header

Head coach, Pat Lam says he is relishing Saturday's Ashton Gate double-header, praising the work of Kim Oliver and the Bristol Bears Women squad.

“Bristol Bears Women do a good job and we enjoy working alongside them. Kim (Oliver) has been here at the training ground a few times and the boys have been in to their camp to do some coaching and one on one stuff, so it’s great that we’re all on the pitch for the double-header this week and hopefully people will support both games.”

Quelling Quins

Lam is expecting another tough test from Paul Gustard's Harlequins.

“Same as every week, they’ll be tough. It’s the exciting thing about the Premiership, once you finish one, the next challenge is upon you," said Lam.

"They’ve had moments in all three of their games where they are real class, and they’ll be trying to do exactly what we’re doing.

"You can see there’s a shift in their culture and work ethic and that doesn’t surprise me with Paul Gustard in charge.”
