Inspirational Calum to lead teams out at Ashton Gate

An inspirational young man will lead out the teams before Sunday’s opening fixture of the Championship season against Hartpury at Ashton Gate.

Calum Morris and his brother Oliver are today’s mascots and are here alongside British Heart Foundation, the nation's heart charity and the largest independent funder of cardiovascular research.

The 11-year-old was born with a condition called truncus arteriosus, which means that his aorta and one of his arteries were fused together. Without an operation, Calum wouldn’t have survived.

Calum needed to have open-heart surgery very soon after he was born to ensure it could function and in his 11 years has already had four operations, with his most recent taking place in May.

“Calum and Olly are incredibly excited about being mascots. The whole family are regular attenders and supporters of Bristol Rugby, so this really is a dream come true.”

Sarah Standing, British Heart Foundation

“In the lead up to and during this terrifying time for the family, Calum allowed the BHF into his life to show us all what it’s like for someone like him,” said Sarah Standing, Fundraising Manager at British Heart Foundation’s Gloucestershire and Bristol branch.

“But it has also raised awareness of the incredible BHF-funded research of his surgeon, Professor Massimo Caputo, who is developing a patch that will be able to grow as Calum’s heart grows.

“Amazingly, this patch could be available in the next five years. This would end the need for such regular life threatening surgery for Calum and children just like him.

“Calum and Olly are incredibly excited about being mascots. The whole family are regular attenders and supporters of Bristol Rugby, so this really is a dream come true.”

A bucket collection for British Heart Foundation will also take place at this afternoon’s game, so keep an eye out for the fantastic volunteers and please give generously.
