International round-up: Lam's Samoa lose, Piutau's Tonga triumph

A last minute penalty from the USA's Will Hooley saw Samoa - featuring five Bristol Bears players - slip to a 30-29 defeat in San Sebastian on Saturday.

Captained by Jack Lam, Samoa lost their first game of the November tour, falling 30-29 to the Eagles at the Anoeta Stadium. Tusi Pisi and Alapati Leiua also started for Samoa, while James and Jordan Lay were among the replacements.

Hooley's successful penalty kick gave the USA their first win over the Manu in six attempts.

There was better news for Siale Piutau, who captained Tonga to a 49-38 victory over the French Barbarians in Bordeaux.

Tonga raced ahead and held on to beat the French Barbarians 49-38 in a thrilling contest featuring 13 tries on Saturday.

Scrumhalf Sonatane Takulua scored two tries and converted all seven for Tonga, which led 28-7 at the interval and 49-14 before the Barbarians — featuring five French players from the side which won the Under-20 World Cup in June — mounted a late surge.
