Job vacancy: head of strength & conditioning

Bristol Bears has an exciting role for a head of strength and conditioning to join their team ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Overview of role:

The role is based within Bristol Bears Rugby, an organisation that is athlete-centred and who places high value on their medical and performance staff as it relates to player development and management.

The Head of Strength & Conditioning will lead on athletic performance training programming and sports science processes, to complement existing medical services, that drive overall performance outcomes.

The individual will be confident in all areas of fitness programming, performance data management, analysis and reporting.

Reports to:

  • Head Coach, Bristol Bears Rugby

Other key relationships:

  • Current roster of players
  • Head of medical services
  • Team manager
  • Coaching staff

The head of strength & conditioning will be primarily responsible for:

  • Lead a team of qualified strength and conditioning professionals in the physical development of an elite rugby union program across professional and academy programs
  • Develop in-season, off-season and year-round programming, motivated towards increased performance outcomes across all areas of training and recovery
  • Performance data management and interpretation
  • Lead on performance criterion in parallel to existing frameworks and sporting outcomes
  • Assist with recovery planning and performance nutrition
  • Work as part of an interdisciplinary team including coaches, physiotherapists, logistics managers, talent development coaches and scouts

Qualifications and experience:

Essential:

  • MSc specializing in human performance, or related area
  • Experience of working within a high performance, professional sporting environment for at least 5 years
  • Background in performance analysis/ sports science technologies, with high-level intelligence of injury, pathophysiology, recovery and nutrition
  • Knowledge and understanding of rugby union and the development pathways

Desirable:

  • 2+ years working in a successful, high-performance rugby environment
  • PhD with research in high-performance sport
  • Experience with data-analysis systems such as R, Python and other statistical software

  • Thrives in a team environment and continually contributes positively to an interdisciplinary team
  • Strong, transferrable communication skills, with high emotional intelligence
  • Confident decision-making skills, with focus on detailed, measurable outcomes
  • Proven ability to work productively and to deadline in high-pressure environments
  • Intrinsically motivated, with a demonstrably high level of commitment to the role and the team
  • Ability to quickly adapt and respond to a fast-paced environment.
  • A discreet, professional and confidential approach
