Lam calls for resurgence as Bears eye knockout stages

Pat Lam says Bristol Bears are keeping their eyes on the prize of a home quarter final, as they welcome Brive to Ashton Gate knowing victory would secure their spot in the last eight of the Challenge Cup.

The Bears head into the game off the back of three straight defeats in the Gallagher Premiership, and the Director of Rugby insists they are striving for improvement this weekend.

“We want to, firstly qualify, secondly get a home quarter final,” said Lam. “So, we’re on track there, but we know that these next two games are massive, starting at home against Brive. We need a very good win – the ideal is to get five points, that’s the goal this week.

“We’ve got to improve as a team, we know that, but going into the Challenge Cup, we’ve done four great rounds to put ourselves in a fantastic position.

“Nothing is guaranteed, as we know, but we just stay focused on this journey. Teams before have done the first four rounds really well but then blown the last couple, or got to a quarter and lost there. It’s a cup competition, so we go one game at a time.

“Nothing changes, and the thing about Leicester is that it was better than our performance against Wasps, but we still got a couple of things wrong, and we’ve acknowledged those with the boys. We’ll tidy them up and I’m confident they will make a huge difference to us in the long run.”

Lam believes Brive will arrive in the West Country fired up and seeking revenge for the 36-0 drubbing at Stade Amédée-Domenech in November and has called on his side to rise to the challenge on Saturday.

“You saw with Stade Francais – we beat them well at home and then away, it was a lot closer. Sport is like that – when you play a team and beat them well, they’ll be pretty fired up, and we won’t get too carried away with what we’ve done in the past. We move on to the next challenge, starting this weekend.”

Tickets are available from £25* for adult members and under-12s from £10* (*excludes booking fee). This game is included in your 2019/20 season card package.
