Lifelong Bristol supporter George Berry will play the Last Post as part of the Armistice Day commemorations on Saturday, November 11th.
Bristol Rugby host Rotherham Titans in the Greene King IPA Championship at Ashton Gate and will be holding a minutes’ silence before the game.
George, 18 – who is studying at Birmingham University – started playing the trumpet when he was ten years of age.
His great-grandfather, George Harry Berry, was a World War II bomber pilot, flying a Bristol Blenheim as part of the ‘Doom Squadron’.
Tragically, George’s plane was shot down over Libya in 1942. His wing commander, Hugh Gordon Malcolm, would later be awarded the VC for his squadron’s gallantry in the face of certain death.
George visited his great-grandfather’s grave in Tunisia on the anniversary of his passing, playing the Last Post as an act of remembrance when he was 10. He has since played at ceremonies at his school, Colstons, his combination club Old Bristolians, and at Bristol Cathedral for the Merchant Venturers.
“I’m honoured to be invited to Ashton Gate to play in front of the Bristol supporters. Remembrance Day is something that is very close to my heart and it’s particularly important to everybody involved with Bristol Rugby,” said George.
Bristol United are also set to host the UK Armed Forces in an invitational game at Ashton Gate on Wednesday, November 8th (7.45pm KO).
Tickets for the charity clash are available for £6 for adults and £2 for U12s, with no concessions for season card holders.
