Lindsay urges Bears Women to play with confidence and belief

Bristol Bears Women co-lead coach Tom Lindsay has urged his Bristol Bears Women squad to play with confidence and belief ahead of their trip to face Loughborough Lightning on Saturday (2pm KO).

The Bears will be in action for the first time in three weeks as they look to get back to winning ways as Allianz Premier 15s action resumes following an enforced mid-season break.

This weekend’s outing will be the first for the group since the departure of former Head Coach, Kim Oliver and Lindsay believes the group have grown closer under the challenging circumstances.

UNITY

“When the announcement was made it was a case of us, as a coaching group and playing group, reflecting on how much Kim has done for the club both on and off the field, as a player and coach,” said Lindsay

“Personally, for me, she has helped me a lot to group but it does get to point where elite sport is a cruel mistress and there gets to a point where you have to put a line in the sand and move forward.

“Speaking from experience of being in environment where that does happen, your squad and staff can either become a tight-knit group or become a group that becomes quite negative or toxic and can splinter. For me, the group dealt with it very well and we’ve moved forward and if anything, got tighter both on and off the pitch.

STEPPING UP

“The leaders have been fantastic. They have taken on board the things that we have been developing over the last few months and now they have taken the bull by the horns, as it were.

They’ve got their own analysis and focus point going into this week, the players are leading it and all we’re doing is giving them the blueprint when it comes to training and ideas around what to perform on Saturday.”

BELIEF

“Credit where it is due, Loughborough are sitting in fourth at the moment and they have got stronger over the last few years.

“This game is firmly about us and our performance. Can we put the things we have talked about in place and can we have that mindset and belief? I firmly believe we can go out there and get a result, anytime we step out onto the pitch.

“The girls need to believe and trust themselves that they have got the confidence and experience. They’re all fantastic rugby players, they just need to believe it and go out there and prove it to everyone.”
