Luatua and O'Conor shortlisted for Gallagher Premiership Player of the Season

Steven Luatua and Piers O’Conor have been been nominated for the Gallagher Premiership Rugby Player of the Season award.

Six players have been nominated for the award, including two each from Bristol Bears and Exeter Chiefs.

Sam Simmonds is hoping to cap off an excellent campaign with the biggest individual prize of the season after his try-scoring heroics for the Chiefs.

Simmonds crossed for a hat-trick against London Irish in May to break Christian Wade’s and Dominic Chapman’s Premiership Rugby try-scoring record for a single season and he has since taken his tally to an incredible 20.

The No.8 has been recognised for an outstanding season with a call-up by The British & Irish Lions for their summer tour to South Africa.

Simmonds is joined on the shortlist by his Chiefs teammate and fellow back-row star Dave Ewers, who has also chipped in with six crucial tries of his own.

Like the Chiefs, Bristol Bears also have two players nominated in captain Steven Luatua and versatile centre Piers O’Conor.

Captain Luatua has been a fabulous leader at Ashton Gate and is playing some of the best rugby of his career. Dangerous in the loose and immense at the breakdown, he has won nine turnovers for his side this season and scored a try against Harlequins on Boxing Day.

In a team packed full of star backs, O’Conor has stood out for the Bears this season, crossing for six tries, gaining 876 metres and beating 50 defenders. He was also named Player of the Month in January.

Harlequins’ Marcus Smith is also nominated after another excellent season at the Stoop.

The fly-half has scored more points than any other Gallagher Premiership Rugby player this season (260) and sits joint-fourth in the try-scoring charts with eight.

An elusive and dangerous runner, he has once again been one of the most exciting players to watch in the league as Quins prepare for a return to the Gallagher Premiership Rugby Semi-Finals.

Gallagher Premiership Rugby Player of the Month for May

Completing the list is Leicester Tigers flanker Jasper Wiese, who is hoping to make his South Africa debut against the Lions this summer.

Wiese has been called up by the Springboks after an excellent season for a revamped Tigers side.

Along with the winner of the Gallagher Premiership Rugby Player of the Season award, the winners of the following awards will also be announced at the 2021 Premiership Rugby Awards, presented by Gallagher:
