Luatua targeting fast start when Premiership resumes

Steven Luatua has urged the Bears to be quick out of the blocks when the Gallagher Premiership returns next week, as they aim to pick up where they left off before the enforced break when Saracens visit Ashton Gate.

Momentum the key

Bristol sit third in the table with eight wins and a draw already this season – and Luatua says momentum will be key with the fixtures coming thick and fast.

“Expectation is a word that has been thrown around, but we set our team goals at the beginning of the season,” he said.

“Top six was the target and we’re well and truly in that - we just need to keep up that momentum. It’s been a tough one because we were going so well when Covid hit, but we’ll see if we can pick up where we left off.

“We’re now a fresh and new set of players, we’ve got to continue with our goals but have the realisation that we’re not the same team as we were.

Winning environment

“With the momentum that we had previously, that might not come right away, but we all know where we can be. The majority of us know what it was like to be in that winning environment and we all want to try and breed that again.

“Before the break, we were finding ways to win, which is something this club has probably been missing, especially in our first year in the Premiership. We were getting really close in the last 20 minutes but would then go on to lose, and that taught us a lot.

Fast start

“But I see the drive and dedication from the boys to grow from those experiences, try and get better and it ultimately it has ended up with us getting a lot more wins. It might take some time, but hopefully we can get back up and running quickly.”
