Lucas Slowik To Retire From Rugby

Lucas Slowik has retired from professional rugby at the age of 19.

The Academy centre became the youngest player in the professional era to start a competitive game for the Club in 2013 when, at 17 years and 268 days, he lined up against Gala in the B&I Cup.

Slowik took the decision to retire following an accumulation of injuries sustained while playing.

“It was a tough decision to stop playing the game I love, but I felt that it was the right call for me to make long-term,” he told bristolrugby.co.uk.

“I have ten percent vision in my left eye which affects my depth of vision and impacts upon my perception during a game.

“Whereas I could almost get away with it at schoolboy and college level, the players I come up against now are better or one step ahead; I’ve had to accept I won’t ever get to that stage, especially as I keep picking up knocks.

“I can’t fault the support of the staff and players – they’ve been fantastic and put me in the best position to move onto the next challenge.

“It’s been a great experience for me to represent the Club and to play alongside my team-mates.”

Slowik linked up with the Western Province Academy in Cape Town last season and has represented Cinderford in National One on a dual-registration agreement in 2015.

Academy Manager Mike Hall said: ““We wholeheartedly support the decision Lucas has made. It is difficult to see any player give up the sport they love and have been passionate about for so many years, however, this is the start of a new chapter for Lucas in his life journey and he has the full support of everyone here at Bristol Rugby.

“I would personally like to thank him for the way he has always represented the shirt with passion and humility. I am sure he will take away some great memories from his time at Bristol.”
