Match Report: Gloucester-Hartpury 17-24 Bristol Bears Women

Bristol Bears Women made it two wins from two West Country derbies to start the season and take maximum points against Gloucester-Hartpury at the Alpas Arena.

What happened?

With both sides winning their opening fixtures it set up Saturday afternoon’s West Country derby to be a humdinger and it certainly delivered.

Emma Sing opened the scoring for the Cherry and Whites with a thunderous penalty goal which soared over the crossbar and broke the deadlock early doors.

Gloucester-Hartpury stretched their lead out to ten points when Connie Powell bundled over the line to finish a slick attacking move from the hosts, with Tatyana Heard’s bulldozing run providing the spark for the opening try.

Bears would have their opportunities with plenty of territory and possession, but they failed to capitalise and couldn't get off the mark before the half-time break.

The second half brought a renewed energy and focus for the Bears and they would be the first to score in the second period as Phoebe Murray cruised over out wide to bring the Bears back into the game.

Kelly Smith would restore Gloucester-Hartpury’s ten-point buffer with a try against the run of play, but it would be all Bears from there on out.

Hannah West crashed over the line off the back of a dominant rolling maul before Murray grabbed her second in style finishing a free-flowing move with offloads and audacious passes galore.

With the score locked up 17 points apiece heading into the final ten minutes it was all set up for a grandstand finish.

Lucie Skuse’s pinpoint penalty gave Bears the perfect platform to set up devastating driving maul which saw Rownita Marston come up with the ball and seal a memorable victory at the Alpas Arena.
