'Mentality is key at St Peter' - Lam

  • ‘Jersey have a good record of beating league leaders.’
  • ‘Reds have passionate supporters, we’re looking forward to going to St Peter.’
  • ‘We’ve prepared well, but we must get out attitude right on the day.’
  • ‘British and Irish Cup was good opportunity for some players.’

Pat Lam says Bristol Rugby are relishing the challenge of this weekend’s trip to the Channel Islands to take on Jersey.

Bristol travel to St Peter looking to extend their unbeaten league run to seven games, but the head coach is wary of a Jersey side with a history of upsetting the form book.

“If you look at Jersey over the years, they certainly target a game and they knocked Worcester off, they knocked London Irish off – and I’m sure we’re their number one target for this season,” he said.

“We’ve had good preparation for this game and it’ll continue through this week. But the big one for us is around our attitude and if we don’t have that right, it’s going to be a long, hard day at the office for us.

“Forget about tables, forget about names, it’s team versus team and we’ve got to make sure we are mentally right to deal with the challenges we face, particularly away from home and particularly at a place like Jersey."

“I’m really looking forward to it, I’ve never been there and you hear a lot of good things about it. I know it’s a passionate support they have over there and everyone tells me the ground has a great atmosphere, so it’s another good challenge for us."

Bristol head into the game on the back of a first defeat of the season, suffered at the hands of Doncaster Knights in last weekend’s British and Irish Cup clash – and although disappointed at the result, Lam says the club’s youngsters can take plenty of positives from the two-week cup block.

“The B&I Cup gave us the chance to give other guys some games and I really wanted to get guys out there and give them a chance to show what they can do. It was crucial to give everyone that chance.

“It was a disappointing result on the weekend, but it was an opportunity for some really good learning and a chance to see where some of our guys are at. It’s all part of the development. No one likes losing but it’s part of the journey to get to where we need to be.”
