Murray prepared for Lightning test

Bears Women centre Phoebe Murray relishes the challenge of welcoming Loughborough Lightning to Shaftesbury Park on Saturday afternoon (2pm).

The 21-year-old says the mood camp has been good following their season opening victory over Exeter, but insists the Bears are focused on tackling a different beast in Loughborough.

“The atmosphere at training this week has been really good, we’re all looking forward to tomorrow’s game and challenging ourselves against a top side,” said Murray.

“We managed to come away with a five point down in Exeter, but as a group we’re keen to prove that we have more. Loughborough are a very good side, we know that from previous games, and this weekend is a good opportunity for us to get out on our home pitch and really test ourselves.

“Hats off to Exeter last weekend, it was an incredibly tough game and they pushed us right to the end but it was good to see that in those instances where it got tough, that we stuck together and fought it out until the end.”

Kim Oliver’s side will be looking to make it three successive home victories over Loughborough on Saturday afternoon and Murray knows the Bears’ side will go from strength to strength with increased game time.

“Coming into the season we’re confident in our ability because we have a great club culture, which has created cohesion on the pitch.

“The more minutes we get together as a group this season, the better we’re going to get. This weekend is another opportunity to get more time time together, and strengthen our playing relationships.

“These are the games we all want to be a part of, and we need to test ourselves against the best if we’re wanting to improve our performance levels.”
