Northampton press in brief: five things we learned

Head coach Pat Lam and centre Will Hurrell faced the media ahead of Saturday's game against Northampton Saints at Ashton Gate - here's what we learned from this week's press session.

Accuracy

Pat Lam says his side need to be 'on the money' when Saints visit BS3 on Saturday.

“They are a well-rounded side. There’s a lot of past and present internationals, some of them are out training with England today, so they are dangerous if we allow them to play their game.

“We’ve got to be on the money and that’s what we’re working on today and for the rest of the training week.”

Dangerous Saints

Both Lam and Hurrell highlighted the threats posed by Saturday's opponents, as Bristol Bears aim for a third successive home win.

"They are going to want to come here and put a marker down," said Hurrell. "They will want to attack as at set piece and try and dominate us in the backs as well, so we’ve just to front up there, put a big shift and a big performance in and go from there."

Lam added: “You look at the quality they have got, and obviously I know Chris Boyd well from New Zealand. He’s a quality coach and he’s not been in the job very long and there’s a lot of change that he’s making."

Familiar faces

After a three-year spell as a player at Northampton Saints, Pat Lam admits it will be weird to face his former club.

“It’s always weird when you go up against a club that’s special to you, but this is my club now and I’m looking forward to hosting them and the supporters that come this way."

Ashton Gate support

Hurrell and Lam praised the Ashton Gate faithful for their support so far this season, and have called for a repeat performance this weekend.

"They really get behind you in tough times and it pushes you on and we just want to make them proud, make Ashton Gate a fortress, and three from three would be fantastic," said Hurrell.

“There are two great groups of supporters, so hopefully a lot more will come to the game this week and we give them something to be proud of,” added Lam.

Injury update

The head coach gave an update on injuries to Chris Vui, Jordan Crane and Luke Morahan.

“At this stage, probably out of all of them, the least concern is probably Luke Morahan - his was more of a strain,” he said.

“Jordan Crane could be a couple of weeks with a hamstring strain and Chris Vui is probably the one facing further tests around his groin, so we’ll know what the length of that is in a few days’ time."
