Northampton Saints press in brief: five things we learned

Head coach Pat Lam and wing Luke Morahan faced the media ahead of Satuday's Gallagher Premiership clash with Northampton Saints at Franklin's Gardens - here's what we learned from this week's press session.

Derby delight

Pat Lam reflected on a memorable home victory over Gloucester at Ashton Gate and urged his players to kick on for the rest of the season.

"It was an excellent result against Gloucester," he said. "I thought the boys brought a lot of energy to the game.

"We’ve slowly been improving every game. It wasn’t perfect, and we know that, but certainly we did a lot more right than wrong in the game. It was a good result for us, but now we move on to another big challenge."

In search of a streak

Luke Morahan has challenged Bristol to record back-to-back league wins for the first time this season when they take on Northampton Saints on Saturday.

Saints' five-game winning streak was brought to an end by Saracens last weekend, while Bristol ended a run of three defeats with victory over Gloucester at Ashton Gate.

“We look up that table and it (the top six) doesn’t look impossible," he said.

"The Gloucester game stood us in good stead to put a run together now, and that’s what we need to do.”

Up to the challenge

Pat Lam says Bristol face a stern test at Franklin's Gardens against a side with a similar playing style to his. It's a match that also sees Lam return to his old stomping ground having played 43 times for Saints over three seasons.

"The way they play, it’s very similar. They like to use the ball and it’s going to be a great day.

"It’s a great pitch at Franklin’s Gardens, great atmosphere and wonderful people up there too.

"So I think it’s going to be a really enjoyable game of rugby for both teams."

Confidence

Luke Morahan insists confidence is high as Bristol Bears go in search of a first away win of the season against Northampton Saints at Franklin’s Gardens.

“I think everyone has gained confidence," he said.

"In the second-half of the season, you’ve played everyone, and you know what it’s all about.

“But I think it’s a confidence in our team and how our game plan is coming together.

"It’s a combination of things, but there is definitely confidence in the group.”

Saints threats

Both Lam and Morahan highlighted the threats posed by Northampton, with Lam also hailing the impact of director of rugby, Chris Boyd.

"We’re really looking forward to the challenge that Northampton pose," said Lam.

"They are playing great rugby and I think Chris Boyd has made a big difference – we can all see that in the way they play."

Morahan added: "When you look at Saints, they’ve got good players across the board – a couple of good wingers, hard-running centres, some good forwards and a good couple of nines. So, there are threats across the board and we need to be ready for that."
