Number Crunch: Challenge of the Chiefs

All of the key player, team and form statistics ahead of the New Year's Day Gallagher Premiership clash with Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park.

THE FORM

  • Exeter Chiefs have suffered just two defeats since Round 2 of Gallagher Premiership Rugby, both at home, to London Irish and Newcastle. The Chiefs have won their last two matches at Sandy Park, beating Saracens in Premiership Rugby and Montpellier in the European Champions Cup.

  • Bristol Bears have lost their last three Gallagher Premiership Rugby encounters since beating Worcester at Ashton Gate on 6 November. The Bears have not lost four in succession in the competition since 2018. Bristol have won just once away from home in Premiership Rugby this season: 45-33 at London Irish in Round 7.

  • Curiously, the last four fixtures between the two clubs in Premiership Rugby have all gone the way of the away side, whilst the Bears have won on their last three visits to Sandy Park in all competitions.

THE NUMBERS

  • Exeter Chiefs have won six of their eight meetings with Bristol in the Premiership (L2), their 75% win rate is the joint best by any team to have faced the Bears more than twice (Wasps also 75%).
  • Bristol have won just twice against Exeter (L6), however those victories have come in their last two meetings at Sandy Park, despite trailing at halftime in both matches; Bristol could become just the third side to win three consecutive away games against Exeter in the Premiership after Leicester Tigers (2013-14) and Northampton Saints (2012-14).
  • Exeter Chiefs have won six of their last eight matches in the Premiership (L2), although both defeats in that spell came at Sandy Park, losing to London Irish in October and Newcastle Falcons in November.
  • Bristol Bears have lost their last three Premiership matches, however theyโ€™ve not lost more consecutive league games since a run of four straight defeats between September and November 2018, which included a defeat to Exeter.

  • Exeter have scored seven tries following a tap penalty in the Premiership this season, more than any other side, that total accounting for 23% of their overall tries, also the highest rate of any team this season.
  • Bristol Bears (1.7) and Exeter Chiefs (1.9) are two of just three teams to average fewer than two points per 22 entry in the Premiership this season (also Sale Sharks, 1.7); Exeter have conceded just 1.9 points per 22 entry though, only Leicester have conceded fewer, while only Saracens (7.9 per game) have allowed their opponents into their 22 less often than the Chiefs (8.0).
  • Bristol Bears have averaged 11.7 successful offloads per game in the Premiership this season, over three per game more than any other club; Exeter Chiefs have made 4.6 offloads per game, only Gloucester (4.2) have made fewer.
  • Exeter have enjoyed 56% possession on average in the Premiership this season, more than any other team, averaging the most carries per game of any side in the league (134); Exeter (755) and Bristol (747) rank 2nd and 3rd respectively for carry metres in the Premiership this season (London Irish, 779).
  • The top six players to average the most attacking ruck hits per game in the Premiership this season (min. 2 appearances) all play for Exeter Chiefs - Jonny Hill (33.5), Jannes Kirsten (28.2), Sean Lonsdale (23.5), Dave Ewers (23.2), Richard Capstick (22.3) and Don Armand (22.1).
