Oliver proud of defensive effort despite loss

Kim Oliver has praised her squad determination and fight to keep Loughborough at bay and earn a late losing bonus-point on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears fell two tries behind in the first ten minutes through scores from Lark Davies and Emma Hardy, but Oliver’s side dug deep to keep Lightning from scoring for the remainder of the contest, allowing them to steal a deserving losing bonus-point at the death.

“There was a massive defensive effort from the squad throughout the game,” said Oliver.

“We put Loughborough under a lot of pressure and forced a lot of errors. To stick in the game and come away with a losing bonus-point at the end makes me very proud of the group.

“Conditions were awful, which made it difficult for either side to keep hold of the ball and gain any momentum. We stuck in there until the end and hats off to the girls for getting something from the game.

“It was a real squad effort. We had eight changes to the starting line-up and everyone that came in stepped up to the challenge against a big, physical Loughborough team.

“The players that came off the bench and into the action did an outstanding job also, and there were some big moments especially in defence that lead to us getting a point.

“There were a lot of handling errors, the ball was very wet and it wasn’t travelling well, so we just needed to take a little step and give ourselves some more time on the ball and be more patient when we get into the red zone.”

Bristol Bears Women are back in action at Shaftesbury Park this Saturday (October, 31st) as they take on Wasps Ladies in their rescheduled Allianz Premier 15s fixture.
