London 2012 Paralympian and 7/7 Survivor Martine Wright MBE inspired the Big Sports Speaker audience at Ashton Gate with her incredible story.
Martine Wright lost both her legs during the 7th July 2005 London Bombings, when a series of co-ordinated suicide attacks targeting civilians on public transport during the morning rush hour. Fifty two people died with over 700 injured.
For everybody in Britain, those two days were among the strangest and most shocking in recent history, for Martine, it provided a spring board for new opportunities, goals and a new life.
During her rehabilitation, she got married, gave birth to a little boy, learned to ski, undertook a parachute jump and even learned to fly solo following completion of a Douglas Bader Flying Scholarship for the Disabled in South Africa.
In 2009, Martine took part in a ‘have a go’ session for women’s sitting volleyball. She enjoyed the sport and progressed up through the rankings making her debut for the GB Women’s Team at the 2010 Kent International against the Paralympic Champions, China.
After everything that has happened to Martine following the events of that terrifying day, and the long, arduous process of rebuilding her life, the next exciting chapter came when she wore a Team GB vest as part of the sitting volleyball team at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
Former England rugby player and World Cup Champion, Maggie Alphonsi MBE is the next guest speaker at Ashton Gate on Friday, September 30th.
Over the next 12 months a line-up of star guests will provide a unique insight into becoming leaders in their field including former world champion boxer Barry McGuigan MBE, bomb disposal expert Chris Hunter and the 'First Lady of Football' Karren Brady CBE.
