'Pennyhill the ideal preparation' - Afoa

John Afoa says Bristol Bears’ training session against England at Pennyhill Park will stand them in good stead ahead of a return to Gallagher Premiership action next week.

Bristol travelled to Surrey to work alongside Eddie Jones’ squad in a controlled session on Thursday, and the former All Black prop hailed a productive afternoon.

“It was great to come down to Pennyhill and put into practice some of the stuff we’ve been working on against some really quality opposition,” said Afoa.

“The boys were excited building up to the training session – we had some good sessions on Monday and Tuesday and it gave us something to build towards this week.

“It was great to come to a fantastic facility, and it was a really good, productive session. The speed of ball was quick, but we adapted, got our game plan going and made a few good breaks and worked some strong lineouts.

“Pat talks about international standards and reaching that next level, so to come here and see how England operate – especially for the young English players we have here - it’s been a great experience for the squad.”

Bristol welcome Wasps to BS3 on Friday night looking to avenge a narrow defeat at the Ricoh Arena in November, and Afoa says there’s a ‘positive vibe’ in the squad ahead of the game.

“The games have been tough all season, but we’ve had a good break and now we look ahead to Wasps on the Friday night at Ashton Gate.

“The squad is feeling good, there’s a positive vibe and we’re going to be excited to get out on the field.”
