Player Pathway Club Profile: North Bristol RFC

As part of Bristol Bears Women’s newly formed Player Pathway we’re highlighting the fantastic work done that is being done at local clubs involved.

The Almondsbury-based rugby club currently have over 50 players registered across two senior women’s teams with their first team enjoying recent success in the form of promotion to National Championship One in 2019/20.

Meanwhile, North Bristol RFC’s second team provides a development platform for players new to the game as well as more social setting for those wanting to get involved in women’s rugby.

The club’s commitment to women’s rugby does not just stop at their senior set-up, the club boasts over 70 registered youngsters across their girls’ age groups.

North Bristol RFC are well represented in the current Bristol Bears Women elite squad with Rownita Marston and Ellie Mulhearn beginning their rugby journey at the club, as well as former Bear, Charlotte Wright-Haley who now ply’s her trade at Worcester Warriors Women.

Both Marston and Mulhearn are still actively involved with their grassroots club with prop Ellie Mulhearn returning to coach at the club.

The connection with the Bears does not stop there. Anya Small, who played for Bristol throughout the 2019/20 season, now represents NBRFC with a number of other players who are developing at the club while on the Player Pathway.

Chair of North Bristol RFC, Steve Bold said: “It’s a massive achievement and honour for us to be part of the Player Pathway. We always support players to play to the best of their ability and if they have aspirations of playing at a higher level then we will continue to support that too.

“The pathway allows us to highlight talented players to the Bears as well as provide a high standard of rugby to those who are wanting to join the club. This accompanied with the fantastic set-up we have both on and off the field shows the club is going from strength to strength.

“We already have a very good relationship with Bristol Bears Women. Matt Belbin used to coach at the club, and our current coach Ellie Mulhearn is a regular player at Premier 15s level.

“To now be able to draw on the experience of the Bears coaches and get support with strength and conditioning, nutritional advice gives us one of the best packages for members outside of the Allianz Premier 15s.

“With the removal of the Premier 15s Development League their needs to be a way for local talent to be spotted and transition from college or university rugby into adult rugby. We feel we are able to do that at a high level and offer a very professional experience for those looking to improve and grow as players.

“We have a fantastic set-up at North Bristol RFC for Women of all experience and abilities and are proud to be one of the official Player Pathway clubs of the Bristol Bears Women.”
