Powell set for England U20s debut

Charlie Powell will make his full England U20s debut against the Junior Springboks at Coventry Rugby's Butts Park Arena on Friday (7.30pm KO).

The match - streamed live on englandrugby.com - will serve as vital preparation ahead of the World Rugby U20 Championship in June. It will also provide players a final opportunity to earn selection for the Championship, which is being hosted by Argentina.

It is the second-successive year that England have played South Africa ahead of the World Rugby U20 Championship having taken them on at Worcester’s Sixways Stadium in 2018.

The side are led by pathway performance coach Bates, who is assisted by Mark Hopley (forwards), James Scaysbrook (defence) and Richard Whiffin (attack) who are part of the coach development programme agreement with Premiership Rugby.

Steve Bates said: "This is an opportunity for these players to stake a claim for a spot in our squad for the World Rugby U20 Championship and that is how we are approaching the game.

"It is very timely in terms of when the squad for the Championship gets picked, and for some it could be a very important fixture to get a place on the plane to Argentina."

Everybody at Bristol Bears congratulates Charlie on this superb achievement and wishes him well on his international U20s debut.
