Press bitesize: Sale Sharks (a) - Gallagher Premiership

Director of Rugby, Pat Lam and centre, Piers O'Conor faced the media ahead of Saturday's Gallagher Premiership clash with Sale Sharks (3pm KO, BT Sport 2 HD, Channel 5).

Mindset is key

Pat Lam on mindset heading into Sale: “They have been right up there throughout the season. They’ve made a slower start but have had some tough games first up, and they’ll take a lot of confidence from their win last weekend.

“If you don’t get your mindset right, you’ll get blown away. If you go as individuals, you’ll struggle to get anything at the AJ Bell. We expect their front liners to play having been rested last week.”

Back in the game

O'Conor on his return from injury: “It’s never nice to miss any games, so I was raring to go and hope I can build on that now. There’s still plenty of rugby left to play this season and we’ve still got it all to play for, so I’m just pleased to be back in action again."

'Why we play'

Lam on the busy schedule: “This period is great; I love coming into work. There are two types of job in this world – those you have to do and those you love to do. Of course, there are bruises and bangs, but this why we play and coach rugby.

“(Saturday) is no more important than every game we play, there’s another five points available and that’s the goal. The beauty of the Premiership is that everyone is trying to get to the play offs and to do that, you need points.”

Physical challenge

O'Conor on Sale Sharks' threats: “They’ve got big ball carriers, we know they’ll be coming route one defensively and in attack, so I think fronting up this weekend is going to be a big thing and getting ready for a good, physical challenge.

“Everyone is on a short turnaround, so it’s about who recovers faster and who learns their detail faster.”
