Press bitesize: Wasps (h) - Gallagher Premiership

Director of Rugby, Pat Lam and fly half, Callum Sheedy faced the media ahead of Friday's Gallagher Premiership clash with Wasps at Ashton Gate.

Driving home for Christmas

Pat Lam says his side are relishing a return to Ashton Gate for Friday's bumper Christmas clash with Wasps, where a crowd of more than 22,000 is expected.

The Director of Rugby also emphasised the importance of balance and family time over the festive period.

"When you’ve been away for a while and you love Ashton Gate, to get back there is exciting. We’ve got a massive crowd this week, we look forward to it and we want to continue the Christmas cheer. Obviously, five points are on offer for us, it’s been a short week, and we want to put on a good performance.

"I think the important thing is that you prioritise everything. So, when it’s time to be at a team meeting, or rugby training, you make sure you’re 100% focused. And we talked about it as a group – when it’s time to be at home with your loved ones and your family, give it 100% and really enjoy that time. It gives you a lot of perspective of why we do what we do, and then you come back and we’re into the game, and you give that 100%.

"This is all about, not only being a really good rugby team, but being good people, good fathers, good partners and good husbands, so I always like this time of the year. It seems like it’s been a while since we were at Ashton Gate, but we’re excited."

Bouncing back

Callum Sheedy says Bristol Bears can learn from last weekend's defeat at Saracens, and has called for a response against Wasps on Friday night.

"The biggest learning for us as a team from last week, was just how clinical Saracens were. They had period of 15 minutes where they scored three tries, 21 points, and put the game beyond us.

"The tries just before and after half time showed why they are a champion side, and that's where we want to be."

Festive buzz

Sheedy also hailed the impact of the Bristol faithful and says the squad is excited for another electric Ashton Gate atmosphere.

The fly half also highlighted the threats of Friday's opponents, Wasps.

"The Bristolians really get behind the Bears - and I know I'm biased, but I think they're the best fans in the country. I'm really looking forward to Friday, there's 20k plus fans coming along, so it's going to be an electric atmosphere.

"When you look at the Wasps team on paper, there's so much quality from 1-23. They're an excellent side and on their day, they are one of the best sides in the league.

"We know we need to put in a good performance on Friday night."
