Proud Lam praises Bears for sticking to the plan

A proud Pat Lam is eyeing Bristol’s maiden European title after they snatched a dramatic victory over Bordeaux-Begles in a pulsating semi-final at Ashton Gate.

Extra-time tries from Piers O’Conor and Max Malins saw the hosts break clear following a 20-20 draw in normal time – and Director of Rugby Lam praised his side for sticking to the plan.

'Proud of the boys'

“I’m obviously extremely proud of the boys. We played with endeavour, but you know a bit of déjà vu from last week - we had six turnovers in 10 minutes, we had 13 penalties at half-time and we only had about 30-odd percent possession.

“But at half-time, I said to the boys they (Bordeaux) were tired and there were lots off holes, but we didn’t finish it off, we didn’t have control and we were making those little mistakes.

“So, I said imagine what these guys are going to be like when we can keep the pressure, keep trusting the system, keep working.

“The easy thing was to go conservative, but I said keep going and we managed to get back ahead and then at 20-all, I knew in extra-time we would come in strong and the boys scored some great tries.

“I’m proud for the team, proud for the club to get us into a final in about three weeks’ time, but you know we’ll be wasting time if we don’t get that trophy now.”
