Pat Lam praised his side for ‘grinding it out’ as Bristol Bears downed Worcester Warriors to go third in the Gallagher Premiership at the season’s halfway stage.
Luke Morahan’s try and eight points from Callum Sheedy led the way for Lam’s men – and the Director of Rugby said he was proud of his troops.
“I’m proud of the win because we lost to these guys twice last year – and when you have your first season in the Premiership, you can bank the knowledge that you’re going to play a team like Worcester, who are going to try everything up to the letter of the law to slow your ball down and commit numbers.
“So, we put a big emphasis on the breakdown and we wanted it quick – but we needed to get two scores ahead in the game so it forces them to play, rather than the battle. Unfortunately, we conceded that soft try after half time, so it came down to an arm wrestle, which meant that we just had to grind it out, and there’s no doubt that last season we would have lost that game, so I’m pleased we got the four points.
“It was like last week – we weren’t at our best, but we got the four points.”
Lam also reflected on an impressive first half of the season for Bristol, with six wins and a draw from the opening 11 games.
“Halfway through the season, it’s good, but we also look back and acknowledge that we blew some points and could be further up that table, but it’s a good start.
“It’s just given us a good leverage with that, and then obviously our home quarter final in Europe as well.
“It’s a really good platform and something for us to get excited about so we can come home strong. But we’ve already mentioned, if we do the same things, we won’t win anything – we’ve got to keep improving.”
