Reed and Ward named as co-captains

Bristol Bears Women duo Amber Reed and Abbie Ward have been named as co-captains ahead of the 2021/22 Allianz Premier 15s season.

Talismanic centre Reed is embarking on her 13th season with the club and will continue to lead from the front both on and off the field.

Summer signing Abbie Ward also brings an abundance of leadership experience into the Bears squad having captained at international level with the Red Roses as well as Harlequins.

Head Coach Dave Ward believes the Red Roses pair bring balance as co-captains, with their relationship away from the pitch also aiding their ability to lead as a duo.

“It was an easy decision for me in the end because of Amber’s longevity at the club and her natural leadership within the group,” said Ward.

“I also wanted to see what leaders would come forward throughout pre-season and Abbie has certainly done that, she’s captained at international level with England and Harlequins which certainly helps and to see her come in and lead the forward pack in the way that she has done during pre-season has been fantastic.

“They also both know each other so well on and off the pitch. They know each other’s strengths, but they also know each other’s blind spots and that goes a long way to complimenting each other in performance but also in those leadership roles.”

Supporters can watch Bristol Bears Women in action in their season opener against Exeter Chiefs Women as Allianz Premier 15s rugby returns to Shaftesbury Park on Saturday, September 4th (12pm KO).
