Report: Bristol Bears 29-38 Harlequins

Bristol Bears came out on the wrong side of another high-scoring encounter with Harlequins at Ashton Gate.

Pat Lam’s side fell behind early on to a quick-fire Cadan Murley double but rallied soon after with tries from Steven Luatua - an acrobatic finish in the right-hand corner – and Sam Jeffries, galloping in on the opposite side of the field.

Both try scorers left the field with injuries soon after, and Tom Lawday then powered over for a third Quins’ try on 18 minutes. Dave Attwood powered over from close range to level the scores, before Hugh Tizard collected Archie White’s offload to cruise in under the posts.

Danny Care saw yellow for professional foul on the stroke of half time, and when Bryan Byrne bundled over from a well-worked driving lineout early in the second period, the scores were all square once again.

Callum Sheedy’s penalty edged the hosts in front on 54 minutes, but after Fitz Harding was yellow carded for an adjudged high shot, Jack Walker bagged Quins’ fifth as the score changed hands once again.

The Bears pressed for a score that would see them retake the lead, but at the other end, Luke Northmore latched on to Care’s kick ahead to grab a sixth and seal victory for the visitors.

Harlequins: Tries: Murley 4, 6, Lawday 18, Tizard 30, Walker 67, Northmore 74. Cons: Edwards 4, 6, 30, 74. Yellow: Care 40
