Report: Bristol Bears 31-29 Bath Rugby

Ellis Genge scored two tries on his Bristol return as theย Bears delivered a dramatic late fightback to edge Bath in a sensational West Country derby at Ashton Gate.

The hosts trailed 17-26 heading into the final quarter before Genge's second of the night dragged the Bears within striking distance.

Piers Francis' fourth penalty of the night looked to have snatched the spoils for Johan van Graan's men, but Will Capon's try from a well-worked driving lineout levelled the scores with two minutes left to play.ย

AJ MacGinty held his nerve to slot the decisive conversion, but there was still time for another Bath opportunity. With the clock in the red, Francis saw his last-gasp drop-goal slide wide to leave the Bears with all five points on a dramatic opening night.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Genge's second-minute try was cancelled out by Ben Spencer, and Magnus Bradbury kept the hosts close as Bath's Piers Francis kicked three penalties.

Luke Morahan gave the Bears a half-time lead, with Bath reserve hooker Niall Annett sent off after a post-try melee.

Bath's Tom Dunn was mauled over as they went in front but Genge scored his second before Will Capon's late winner.

Bath fly-half Francis saw a last-second drop-goal attempt drift just wide as new boss Johann van Graan began his tenure with a losing bonus point.
